Harvard Museum of Natural History | 26 Oxford Street 02138

A new multi-media exhibition, "Headgear" takes an in-depth look at the natural history of horns and antlers. Showcasing an astonishing collection of unique specimens—some on exhibit for the first time, "Headgear" will intrigue and engage learners of all ages.

Horns and antlers are the often-dramatic head structures that characterize many cloven-hoofed mammals including cattle, antelope, sheep, and deer—collectively known as the artiodactyls. These animals exhibit enormous variation in the structure, size, and shape of their headgear, which are distinctive among species and also vary with sex and age. Why have artiodactyls evolved these extraordinary structures, many of which are so heavy and unwieldy? Did horns and antlers evolve as a defense against predators, to repel or intimidate rivals, or as an ornament designed to impress females? In this exhibition, visitors will explore these and other fascinating questions about how horns and antlers are formed, how they have evolved, and how they function.

"Headgear" will feature dramatic arrays of horns, antlers, and head mounts of a wide variety of species drawn from the collections of Harvard’s Museum of Comparative Zoology, as well as 3-D diorama and video presentations illustrating the use of horns and antlers in combat. Visitors will be invited to explore some of the properties of horns and antlers by touching real specimens and comparing their own body height to the world’s largest antlers, those of the extinct Irish Elk, which span as much as 12 feet. In addition, through specimens and text, visitors will learn about the structure and function of horn-like structures in other animals from tiny beetles to massive dinosaurs.

"Digging Veritas: The Archaeology and History of the Indian College and Student Life at Colonial Harvard"

Through archaeological finds from Harvard Yard, historic maps, and more, the exhibition reveals how students lived at colonial Harvard and the role of the Indian College in Harvard’s early years.

Student archaeologists unearthed evidence of colonial Harvard as a landscape shaped by social and religious tensions, which affected everything from Native American and English settler relationships to the everyday routines of student life. As the students searched for meaning in the material remains of Harvard students of the past, three themes emerged: literacy and the Indian College; rule (breaking) and religion; and negotiations of social status. Who knew that small fragments buried below ground could reveal so much?

Exhibit: "Re-View" 10:00 AM - 05:00 PM
Harvard Art Museums | 485 Broadway 02138

This survey of approximately 600 works from the Harvard Art Museums three museums - the Fogg, the Busch-Reisinger, and the Arthur M. Sackler - is a unique installation of objects that have historically been exhibited in separate facilities. The Harvard Art Museum has one of the country's preeminent art collections, and Re-View reflects the diversity and richness of these holdings. The exhibition, which includes familiar highlights, features Western art from antiquity to the present as well as Islamic and Asian art.

Re-View is on long-term view at the Arthur M. Sackler Museum and provides a selected, ongoing display of the collections while the Art Museum's building at 32 Quincy Street - the former home of the Fogg and Busch-Reisinger - is closed for renovation. This major renovation and expansion project designed by architect Renzo Piano, with completion anticipated in 2013, will unite the three museums in a single, state-of-the-art facility. harvardartmuseums.org/re-view
