Founded in 1636, Harvard is the oldest university in the United States. With 18,000 current degree candidates enrolled, Harvard graduates include scores of world leaders including six U.S. Presidents -- John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Theodore and Franklin D. Roosevelt, Rutherford B. Hayes, and John F. Kennedy. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Harvard Yard includes such noteworthy buildings as Wadsworth House (1726) which served as temporary headquarters for General George Washington in 1775; Daniel Chester French's statue of John Harvard (1884; French also sculpted Abraham Lincoln in the Washington D.C. Memorial); and Widener Library (1913-15) which houses the largest university book collection in the world with over 13 million volumes.

Founded in 1861 and originally located in Boston, MIT moved to its current site in Cambridge in 1916. Today approximately 10,000 students attend MIT in its mile-long campus along the Charles River. Notable sites include the MIT Chapel and Kresge Auditorium (designed by Eero Saarinen), the Baker House Dormitory (designed by Alvar Aalto), the Dreyfus, Weisner and Landau Buildings (by I.M. Pei), the Stata Center (Frank O. Gehry) and Simmons Hall (Steven Holl). The campus houses the MIT Museum and the List Visual Arts Center, plus a collection of outdoor modern sculpture including works by Henry Moore, Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson.
